About

Hi, I'm Nicholas Thompson and I am a web developer, geek, nerd, husband & father. I'm based in Surrey in the UK and currently work for an awesome company called with my friend, Stewart Robinson. We craft out-of-this-world websites.

I primarily work with Drupal with work ranging from contributed modules, work related websites to personal hobby sites for myself and friends & family. However I have many interests, incuding iOS game development using Cocos2D and Objective C.

I've been a contibutor to the Drupal community for over 7 years. In that time I have produced modules including the very popular Page Title and GlobalRedirect, both of which are intended to enhance the SEO of your website. With over 36 projects and 650 commits, I enjoy providing back to the community which has altered the path of my career so much!

Thingy Ma Jig

Thingy Ma Jig

Thingy Ma Jig is a site which has gone through many 'faces'. It started off as a playground for me to learn the basics of HTML and CSS and over the years, as my skills and knowledge have grown, so has the website. After starting development on my own homebuilt CMS I was introduced to Drupal which, in my opinion, is a dream to develop in. By this point I knew I had the ability to develop a basic CMS from scratch, however I came to the conclusion that an exercise in reinventing the wheel would prove far less fruitful than using a pre-built wheel and continue to develop the rest of the vehicle.

Its current incarnation is a home to my blog & gets around 500 visitors a day with blog posts dating back 7 years.

Peak Performance

Peak Performance

This was one of the biggest site's I had worked with at the time. It is owned by Electric Word plc and was a case study for a Google handout. It was often commended for its use of Adsense and would often pull in over 17,000 unique visitors per day.

It is a sports performance website with an online archive of over 1,000 free performance enhancing articles. It originated from a subscription newsletter established in 1990 by Sylvester Stein, a gold medal winner.

Sportbusiness

Sportbusiness

This site was originally running in an old legacy CMS powered by AOLServer and Oracle and, while working for Electric Word plc, I was given the task of bringing this site into the 21st century. This was the first site I made using Drupal and I learned a LOT from it, from importing data into it to structuring and theming a site. This is the site which convinced me that Drupal is capable of a lot more than most CMS's were at the time.

The site is aimed at B2B companies and provides daily news articles with an archive of over 26,000 stories plus a catalogue of reports about topics such as Sponsorship, TV Rights and Football in China. The site is now maintained by my colleague Nikos Stylianou and Electric Word are really pushing it towards a Web 2.0 site using technologies such as RSS, Blogs and content tagging.

The release of this site has been showcased on the Drupal.org showcase forum, with a full description on the build process.

Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network

While working as a Senior Web Developer for Turner Broadcasting in London, I was part of a large team and was involved with updating and maintaining Pressflow ( a fork of Drupal with performance enhancements) and hundreds of contributed and custom modules. We also had a hand in the systems admin side of things too, ensuring services like Percona, Varnish and Memcache were all running at peak efficiencies to keep the websites millions of users up.

Toonix

Toonix

Toonix is a massively multiplayer flash game created for Turner Broadcasting by White Hat Media, Attic Media, FutureLab and Full Fat Things. As part of the in-house team at the time, I was involved in implementing a continuous integration system using tools such as Jenkins and Git .

The White Horse Guest House

Toonix

This is a Drupal 7 website I put together for my family who own this guest house in Brixham, near Torquay. It is a responsive design, uses Google Maps with custom markers, a webform for booking and we are building up more content all the time, including a useful links section.
